The most common regret people write to me about is not the colour and not the frame. It is that they bought too small.
A print that looked generous on a screen turns into a postage stamp once it is on a wall. It happens because we judge size against the picture on our phone, not against the furniture it will hang over. Here is the rule I give when someone sends me a photo of their wall.
Art above a piece of furniture should be roughly two thirds the width of that furniture. Not half. Two thirds.
A standard three-seat sofa is about 84 inches (215 cm) wide. Two thirds of that is around 56 inches (142 cm). That can be one large piece, or two or three prints hung together with a small gap between them — the gap counts as part of the group.
| Furniture below | Its width | Art (or group) should span | Works well as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-seat sofa | 60 in / 152 cm | ~40 in / 100 cm | one 24×36 in, or two 16×24 in |
| Three-seat sofa | 84 in / 215 cm | ~56 in / 142 cm | one 24×36 in, or three 16×24 in |
| Queen bed | 60 in / 152 cm | ~40 in / 100 cm | one 24×36 in, or two 20×30 in |
| King bed | 76 in / 193 cm | ~50 in / 127 cm | two 24×36 in, or three 16×24 in |
| Console or sideboard | 48 in / 122 cm | ~32 in / 81 cm | one 20×30 in |
| Nothing below (hallway, stairs) | — | fill about 60% of the empty wall | one 24×36 in or a vertical pair |
Centre of the artwork at 57–60 inches (145–152 cm) from the floor. That is average eye level, and it is the height galleries use. Above furniture, leave 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame — closer than that looks cramped, further and the art floats away from the furniture.
My prints come in standard sizes, so an off-the-shelf frame fits and you are not forced into custom framing:
If you buy a digital download, you print it at whatever size you like — the file is made for large formats, so you can start small and reprint bigger later without buying twice.
Send me a photo of your wall through my shop and I will tell you honestly which size fits. It takes me a minute and saves you a return. If I think a piece is wrong for the room, I will say so.
